Strengthening the resilience of Washington’s coastal communities through collaboration, education, and knowledge exchange

Examples: Case Study Mappers

This page links to several case study mappers that show coastal resilience efforts in the Pacific Northwest.

Washington Coastal Hazards Risk Reduction Project Mapper

CHRN hosts a mapper that logs coastal resilience efforts by CHRN Members and partners along Washington’s shorelines.

Oregon Coastal Hazards Ready (OCHR) Library & Mapper

This tool, hosted by Oregon Sea Grant, compiles case studies on alternatives to typical erosion control measures, and approaches t acute and chronic coastal hazards. Here, individuals, communities, and tribal and local governments can share their work and learn from each other.

Climate Adaptation Resources for Washington (CAR-WASH) Case Studies

This tool, hosted by the UW Climate Impacts Group, compiles case studies on climate adaptation around the state of Washington that have co-benefit research approaches with the intent of expanding research scopes to include case studies with different themes/climate adaptation goals. Examples include all climate hazard topics, such as extreme heat, wildifre and smoke, coastal changes, flooding, and many more.

Floodplains By Design (FbD) Project Map

Since 2013, Floodplains by Design has funded projects in 18 counties across the state of Washington. Many projects are watershed scale approaches that require sustained funding over time and have received multiple rounds of funding. The pins in the map are color coated by the funding round years and you can click on a pin to learn more about the projects in your community.

Soft Shore and Armor Alternative Project Map

This tool provides examples of beach projects on Puget Sound where alternatives to hard shoreline armoring were used. Projects avoided, reduced, or removed hard armor.

The Water Utility Climate Alliance Case Studies

The WUCA site has a wealth of case studies related to engineering, heat impacts and stormwater and wastewater, as well as adaptation best practices that are relevant across sectors.

The Climate Adaptation Knowledge Exchange (CAKE)

The CAKE has hundreds of case studies in a database that can be filtered by sector, climate impact, region and more. The resources can be filtered by region to focus on state-level case studies in the Northwest U.S.

The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit

The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit has hundreds of case studies in a database that can be filtered by topic, stressor, adaptation phase and region.
