In the 20 years since the passage of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, the availability and visualization of datasets has evolved significantly. Whether it is looking at historical data or looking towards the future, datasets and visualizations can not only help inform practitioners plans, programs, and policies, but they can also be helpful in convincing elected officials and citizens to take action. This PIE webinar will focus on two such visualization tools and associated datasets. The first is the Underwater report and mapping tool developed by the Union of Concerned Scientists, focusing on US coastal properties at risk from rising seas over the coming decades under multiple sea level rise scenarios. Data and visualizations can be aggregated at the state, community, and zip code level. The second is the Losing Ground flood visualization tool developed by the National Resources Defense Council which allows users to explore the NFIP’s severe repetitive loss dataset. This tool looks at past flood losses from the 1970s through 2018. Data is aggregated at the state and county level. Presenters will show how to navigate these tools, describe methodologies, and explain potential use cases, including use in hazard mitigation plans at the state and local level.
