King Tides offer a preview of the impacts of projected rises in future sea levels, which will intensify flooding in coastal areas, shift coastal beaches further inland, increase coastal bluff erosion, and threaten coastal aquifers.
The King Tides Initiative is a great opportunity for average citizens to personally get involved in raising awareness about the impacts of sea level rise in their community. To participate in the project, simply check Ecology’s 2015-16 King Tide map and schedule and head to a location near you to snap photographs around one of the listed King Tide times, then upload the photos either to the Anecdata Washington King Tides site or to Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook with the hashtag #KingTidesWA. Check out the Sea Grant and Ecology websites below for more tips on how to take great King Tides photos.
Network members are encouraged to participate themselves, tell their friends, and share information about the Initiative by linking to Washington Sea Grant’s Witness King Tides and/or Ecology’s King Tides in Washington State.
