The Nature Conservancy in Washington has released a new video on the Washington Coastal Resilience Project (WCRP). The video focuses on a specific project in Chinook, WA, where the community came together to protect coastal homes from erosion and sea level rise using a soft armoring approach. Trees with large root systems were placed along the shoreline to break waves, trap sediments, and stop erosion, thus preserving a beach environment that is important to the nearby community and the surrounding ecosystem.
The WCRP was a three-year project that increased the state’s capacity to support local coastal resilience efforts like this one. It also resulted in the development of updated and more detailed sea level rise projections for the state. The WCRP was led by Washington Sea Grant, the Washington Department of Ecology, the University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group (CIG), and The Nature Conservancy, with assistance from many other groups.
